The art and   science of macromolecular architecture is based on synthesis, analysis,   processing, and evaluation of physical properties of polymers. To prepare the   polymers with targeted structures, functional groups, specific molecular   weight and molecular weight distribution is always a powerful driving force   in polymer community. The course aims to provide the students with a   high-level overview of up-to-date synthesis methods for polymers in both   theoretical and practical aspects. Synthesis methods introduced include   living polymerization (anion, cationic and free radical), plasma   polymerization, click chemistry in polymer science, polymerization in supercritical CO2the design and synthesis of dendritic   polymers and hyperbranched polymers. Equipped with the synthetic strategies   and their current applications, students can develop reasonable and practical   synthesis schemes for certain structures with target molecular weight and   polydispersity index, also to predict how a given polymer could possibly be   organized into a secondary or even higher-order structure. Background,   mechanism scope and limitations, and how to apply the methods in the design   of new polymer structures are given for each method. The students will view   the beauty of organic chemistry in terms of structural control of polymers.   They will gain a substantial insight into the problems associated with   synthesizing polymers, proving their molecular structure, determining their   molecular weight, and their application based on the structure and   properties.
